‘COOKING UP A STORM’ - AT RICHMOND COVENTRY

Residents at Richmond Coventry retirement village can now enjoy even better cuisine, thanks to a newly installed state-of-the art kitchen costing over £250,000, the final phase of the £2.6 million refurbishment of the village.

The new improvement follows the appointment of head chef, Colin Buss (40), who joined the Richmond Villages team last year.  He is thrilled with his new high-tech kitchen, and says: “Over the last 12 months I have been busy developing menus to offer our residents popular traditional dishes, but with a modern twist.  Now we have the facilities to prepare even more exciting and interesting cuisine, designed to encourage people to push their ‘comfort zone’ and explore food which is a little different from what they’re used to, making meals not only nourishing, but a fun experience as well.

“Together with our elegant restaurant which opened last year, residents now have a whole social life based around food - I want people to really look forward to mealtimes as an enjoyable highlight of everyday life.”

“My cooking philosophy is simple: just because someone has a small appetite, it doesn’t mean they can’t eat well, and we can provide tasty food which is highly nutritious, too.  Afterall, there’s nothing like good home cooking to put the colour back to your cheeks and make you feel brighter!”

Colin began his career 25 years ago as a silver-service waiter and barman, before undergoing three years of training with a top ranking London chef.

He continues: “Working as a chef in a retirement village is very rewarding, as older people are very appreciative of your efforts.  One of our new initiatives is the monthly supper club, and already very popular.  This has been designed as more ‘gourmet’ than ‘everyday’, and each month we ‘travel round the world’ to a new country, and theme the evening with both the food and a talk about the country as well.

“To make these evenings even more sociable we often invite outside speakers from clubs or businesses such as the local historians, plus the local Rotary and Lions Club so everyone can meet and make new friends.”

Colin is supported by 12 staff in the new kitchen at Richmond Coventry, where together they prepare 250 meals a day.
