A DIAMOND COUPLE
Harold and Dorothy Shaw, married residents from Richmond retirement village in Nantwich, have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary at a party thrown for them by staff, family and friends.
The happy couple, who have been married 60 years, received a telegram from the Queen in honour of their achievement and their son, David, organised a commemorative diamond wedding certificate to present to his parents at the party.
Harold (87) and Dorothy (82) met when they both joined a local choir just before the war, but Harold joined the RAF Air Sea Rescue soon after the war started, and Dorothy worked in the local mill supporting the war effort. However, their courtship survived its duration, and the couple were finally married in August 1948 at St Martin's Church, Castleton, Rochdale. As rations of everything were still short, Dorothy's wedding dress was made from parachute silk, by her second cousin.
After the war, Harold joined Lancashire County Constabulary as a police officer, transferring to Merseyside Police in the early '70s. They have two sons and now four grandchildren ranging in age between 11 and 28.
Jane Beeston, care manager at Richmond Nantwich, said: “Dorothy and Harold are a lovely couple. They live in an independent apartment here in the village and enjoy a full and happy retirement. They see their children and grandchildren often and are a close, traditional family.”
Richmond Nantwich offers a range of retirement homes including luxury village apartments, serviced apartments and care bedrooms, providing residents with different levels of independence to suit all needs. Tudor style properties are built around the bowling green, courtyard and award-winning landscaped gardens. The environment offers peace, security and a sense of community to residents, combined with superb facilities including a restaurant, shop and hair and beauty salon.
