NEW YEAR, NEW HOME – WITH A ‘FUTURE PROOF’ APPROACH TO CARE AND SUPPORT

Properties available from £110,000 - £635,000

The New Year is a time for reflection, and many elderly homeowners and their families will have realised over Christmas that perhaps they are getting to the stage of needing some extra help and a smaller, more manageable home.  Although it’s always a very emotional decision to sell the family property and downsize, chosen carefully, this next step can be a hugely positive experience, providing freedom from the responsibilities and chores, and a new lease of life.

When it comes to elderly care and housing, there is a vast array of different options available, and retirement villages are becoming the choice of many.  Providing everything you need within one setting, and with a ‘future proof’ approach to future care needs, there is independent and assisted living through to 24-hour nursing and dementia care.  The best retirement villages also include central lifestyle facilities such as spas and swimming pools as well as luxury accommodation.

For those who need a helping hand but not the 24-hour care a care home provides, assisted living is becoming increasingly popular.  This provides the opportunity to buy your own apartment along with an ‘independent living’ package, which takes away the daily chores, and allows people more time to enjoy the things they prefer doing.  It also means being surrounded by like-minded people with lots going on, but still with the security of owning your own home and your own front door.  When families come to visit, they can enjoy quality time with their relatives, happy in the knowledge that their loved ones are getting all the help and support they need, which typically includes all meals, a daily housekeeping service, laundry and utility costs.

David Westerby, village manager at Richmond Witney which is now welcoming its first residents, reiterates the benefits of their assisted living Village Suites.  “A retirement village such as this gives residents the reassurance that help and support is available 24-hours a day, plus the peace of mind that the daily chores are taken care of.  This frees them up to enjoy life to the full and take part in the many activities and events that are on tap.”

Recent studies, including those conducted by Aston University and the International Longevity Centre, show that moving to a retirement village can benefit the individual in many ways: reducing the sense of isolation and loneliness - a major problem for many older people living alone; lowering the likelihood of depression; greater independence; decreased GP visits and unplanned hospital stays, while providing a wider choice when planning for later life than would otherwise be available.

Richmond Villages - the ethos

Richmond Villages, who are part of Bupa, understands that social interaction, physical activity and mental stimulation are vital to a happy and fulfilling later life.  Its villages are designed to allow residents easy access to a range of facilities, services and social events with the reassurance of on-site care and support if required.

The villages provide three types of accommodation, from large two bedroom apartments offering an independent lifestyle, one bedroom Village Suites, to 24-hour nursing and dementia care.  The key element is for people to retain as much independence and choice as possible, whilst helping them retain their ‘zest for life’.

Typical village accommodation

Village apartments
Village apartments are large one or two bedroom apartments comprising a fully fitted kitchen, large lounge, master bedroom with en-suite and second bedroom, most with en-suite.  Again, personal care can be provided by Richmond’s domiciliary care team.

Assisted Living apartments
These Village suites are situated within the main village centre building and are designed to help people maintain their independence.  Apartments typically include a lounge, kitchenette and en-suite bedroom.  To remove the daily chores, these apartments come with an ‘Independent Living Package’ which includes all food, daily cleaning, laundry and utilities, meaning you can spend more time doing the things you want to do and maintain your independence.  Personal care packages are available from Richmond’s own on-site domiciliary care team.

Care bedrooms
There are also large en-suite care bedrooms located in the care home within the village centre building to provide nursing and dementia care.  The care home also has its own restaurant and lounges, but the advantage of a Richmond care home over a conventional nursing home is that it is situated within the heart of a social, stimulating community with a wealth of things going on.

Service charge
A service charge is made per property to cover emergency 24 hour call service to the on-site care team, ground maintenance, external property maintenance, a mini-bus service to and from shops and events, buildings insurance, access to all Village activities and events, window cleaning, administration and security.
