REINDEER DELIGHT RESIDENTS AT RICHMOND RETIREMENT VILLAGES

Christmas came early for residents at two Richmond retirement villages thanks to surprise visits from reindeer.

In Richmond Witney retirement village two reindeer - Jingle and Bell - joined children from the local nursery for an afternoon of Christmas carols and sleigh rides.

Children from the Little Treasures Academy gave residents a special performance of songs from their upcoming Christmas play ‘The Wiggly Nativity’, before they all spent time meeting the reindeer, singing Christmas carols and enjoying a ride in Santa’s sleigh.

Elsewhere, staff at Richmond Northampton also arranged a surprise reindeer visit.  They were met by village residents including 102 year old Ethel Gibbins, as well as relatives, staff and their children.

Accompanied by professional handlers, the reindeer were even able to visit inside the home to meet residents who were unable to get out.

Pet and animal therapy sessions are popular across Richmond Villages, and have proven benefits for older people.  As a nation of animal lovers, interactions with animals can help stimulate senses and reduce feelings of stress and agitation - which are common symptoms of dementia.

Speaking of the events Philippa Fieldhouse, managing director of Richmond Villages, said: “Christmas is such a special time, and we want all of our residents to enjoy it.  For many though, they’re not able to get out to enjoy the local activities, which is why we make sure we bring the festive fun to them!  The reindeer have been a real hit and have definitely helped residents get in the Christmas spirit”.
