A HELPING HAND FOR FORMULA ONE FAN

Richmond retirement village at Grange Park, Northampton, is lending a helping hand to Gavin Proctor from Pembroke in Wales, who suffers from advanced Duchene Muscular Dystrophy, so that he can watch the British Grand Prix live at Silverstone in July.

Although at just 35 Gavin is many years younger than the average age of its full time residents, Richmond Northampton is looking forward to welcoming Gavin, as he needs nursing care that cannot be provided by a conventional hotel.  Gavin, who is passionate about motor racing, will be joined by his sister Jackie and nephew Andrew, who will be traveling all the way from South Africa, at the retirement village for three days over the Grand Prix weekend.

The retirement village, which offers a range of homes for older people including one or two bedroom village apartments and serviced apartments, also has a 24-bed care home which provides round the clock nursing care.  The facilities, and the specialist nurses who work on the unit, will provide Gavin with the reassurance and support that he will need during his stay.

Gavin has been a keen fan of motor sport and especially Formula One since the age of ten, but over the last few years, has found it increasingly difficult to get to race meetings because of the restrictions imposed by his condition.  He said: “The British Grand Prix is the highlight of the racing year and I was determined to watch it live.  I knew hotel accommodation was not going to be an option, so looked at the alternatives and I'm delighted that Richmond Northampton can meet my needs.  I am looking forward to the Grand Prix enormously, and will be crossing my fingers for the McLaren Mercedes team and especially our 'local hero', Lewis Hamilton!”

Bridget Penney, village manager of Richmond Northampton, said: “We are very happy to help Gavin and his family – the facilities and services that we have on tap here will suit his needs perfectly, and we are so glad that our assistance means he can pursue his passion, despite his illness.”

With its range of accommodation, Richmond Northampton can provide residents with different levels of independence to suit all needs.  The properties are built in a New England style of architecture and with its meticulously maintained landscaped gardens, the environment offers peace, security and a sense of community to residents, combined with superb facilities which include a restaurant, IT room, library, arts and crafts room, shop and hair and beauty salon.
